Temporary Anchorage Device (TAD)

At Frigo Orthodontics, we are dedicated to providing all of our patients with the most efficient, least invasive treatment plan available. Many other practices insist on performing jaw surgery before starting orthodontic procedures. We believe that there is a better way: the temporary anchorage device (TAD).

What is a Temporary Anchorage device (TAD)?

A TAD, or a temporary anchorage device, is essentially a small pin or screw made from biocompatible titanium alloy. It measures between one to two millimeters in diameter and six to 12 millimeters in length. TADs are strategically placed through the gums into the jaw bone, between the roots of the teeth. They are also sometimes placed into the roof of the mouth, depending on your treatment plan. Because there aren’t any nerve endings in the bones, you will experience little to no pain when they are inserted.

TADs serve as a fixed anchor, which your orthodontist will use to gently shift your teeth. They are normally used in conjunction with braces or as a substitute for headgear. They may be worn for a few months or for the duration of your orthodontic treatment.

What are the benefits of using TADs?

TAD orthodontics have revolutionized the way teeth are shifted. These tiny pins are powerful enough to fix highly complex cases. In the past, jaw surgery before treatment was a must for some patients who had open bites or asymmetric jaw structure. By using these temporary anchorage devices, we can avoid the pain, recovery time, and cost of invasive surgery.

Even if you don’t need jaw surgery, TADs can benefit you in many other ways. They speed up the process of shifting your teeth and can even be used to move teeth in opposite directions. TADs are used in place of rubber bands to help correct issues like underbites, crossbites, and jetbites. They can even replace the need for bridges or implants if you have missing teeth.

TADs allow your orthodontist to make calculated movements to your teeth and jaws. They are also highly efficient, with the ability to cut down the time of overall treatment. TADs have removed many obstacles in the field of orthodontics, empowering us to give you a smile you’ve always dreamed of.

Dr. Frigo is a TAD specialist, and we are currently the only practice on the Mississippi Gulf Coast using temporary anchorage devices. If you or your child has been told that jaw surgery is necessary, or if you have a complex orthodontic case, please reach out to us for a consultation. We will customize a plan for you and explain to you, step by step, how TADs may be used for optimal results.
