Case Study: Jessica
This young lady was one of my first patients out of orthodontic residency. She complained to me that her bite was so bad that she had difficulty chewing her food. At this time in my practice, I was treating severe cases like these in combination with jaw surgery, but this was not an option for this young lady due to circumstances beyond our control.
We elected to use what is known in orthodontics as a ‘camouflage’ treatment plan where lower bicuspids are removed and the upper arch is expanded to simulate jaw surgery. After two years of treatment our patient could readily chew her food normally and the result achieved looked as if we had indeed performed jaw surgery to correct her bite. Needless to say, she was extremely satisfied with the results of her treatment, and she had the smile to prove it!
